Women Only Beaches

Women in Italy have recently gotten fed up of male harassment and unwanted advances on beaches to such an extent that they've created a Male free beach ! According to this article the beach is located on the Adriatic coast and takes up a 50 miles stretch of the coast and it's entrance has a big sign with "No Men" written on it. Even the male owner of the beach only monitors it from a rescue boat just off the beach so as not to intrude. I read from another news source that the beach didn't allow children either, which I thought was a bit of a stretch, but keeping men off the beach seems ok to me. I don't think there is a precedent to this except in Iran .

This article also reminded me of one of our female bloggers complaining about not being able to enjoy her day out at the beach because of bad mannered men harassing her, so maybe this is a good solution to the problem ?

that's so GREAT!! i liked the idea of having a man free beach , we should have something like it in Libya, where we can go swim and enjoy the beach, sand and the sun without being surrounded by men!!!

and the idea of having healthy food and all the other girlie stuff is an extra but it would be a great escape for us girls from our routine life!

awesome post ;)

I would also agree and a "beech" for females only is really good :) as especially in Libya the guys just are impossible with there harassments and advancements and look how cool i am, anyway, i despise all that ........... The kids is a bit of a luxury for females but i think they do need some rest from their kids and time to relax :)

yes I agree that it is a good idea and perhaps in Libya they could at least designate certain days for women only.
even here in Britain we have women only swimming pools that cater for muslim women but only on certain days of the week.

Muslim countries should have had something like this before Italy... but do they care or do we care??.. ughhh FEMALE BLOGGERS make a move!!

OK I was too excited I commented before I finished reading..lol anyway.. there you go... children allowed plz eh.. :oD

There are many beaches, parks, coffee shops, activity clubs, swimming pools just for women here. But where is the time???!!!

I dont think the women in Libya would be happy if their kids werent allowed in as well.. ya kabdi!

Salam PH,
LOVE IT! Perfectly ok with the no kids too. Kids need a break from us. :-)

Hi PH - this is a nice idea and in Libya it is not new. Up to the year that the Sindbad summer resort in central Tripoli was erased Sundays and Wednesdays from from 7- 12 noon the beach was for women and children only. It allowed all the girls to wear the skimpiest bikinis LOL or just swim in their nightgown. I liked those days because I could be around my hijabi friends without their hijabs. Some clubs in Tripoli also have women's only days on the beach. Have never been to those as they are too posh for me :P ...
ti kif ma sme3tush 3anha ya Maiuna and Maysoon ? :P
But yes we 2000 km of coastline in Libya we can definetely devote a few km to women ONLY lol.

Good topic PH !

@ Maiuna :

I thought they didn't in Libya as well; but it seems according to Highlanders account that they do :), which is quite good .

@ maysoon :

Good thing you made the second comment I was about to ask you how you could go without Meral :p.

@ Lebeeya :

"I dont think the women in Libya would be happy if their kids werent allowed in as well.. ya kabdi!"

totally agree ... as for the time maybe you could team up with some of the bloggers and go in the mornings during your vacation :).

@ braveheart :

"at least men can enjoy their beach without wives or families annoying. "

sshhh ..... don't tell them ...then they'll ruin the fun :p .

@ Mani :

It would be a good idea for a private investment firm .... why don't you pursue it ? :)

@ ibeebarbie :

"Kids need a break from us. :-)"

Can you stay away from Amira ..... I think not :P . Anyway I already bought the tickets for you two, so tell me when you want to visit :D and you can check out the Sindbad beach.

@ Highlander :

Thanks for your input sis, if it wasn't for you we would still be pondering on its feasibility in Libya not knowing it has already been implemented :p.

"Good topic PH !"

Glad you liked it :).

"The lifeguard must be a man. You clearly need a man to save women in the sea. It’s a question of muscles."

you just can't get away from sexist attitudes!

By the way have u heard about the womens only beach, also in italy, that was primarily marketed to hijabi (no male lifeguard there:) muslim women? It got a different kind of media attention...

PH said...

@ Maysoon :

I guess the title in itself got you over excited :P.

salaam sis :).

@ Duniazad :

sorry didn't see your comment there, we commented at nearly the same time :).

"you just can't get away from sexist attitudes! "

yes unfortunately you can't :) I've heard we've got some good female swimmers in the girl scouts in Libya :) .... their not as good as some of my friends though :p.

Well according to Bay Watch there's a lot of good female life guards. LOL

Lebeeya said...

When I was 16 years old, I worked for 3 months (in the summer) as a part time Lifeguard at a women sports club in Dubai.

I am living proof that good female swimmers do exist :P

PH said...

@ ibeebarbie :

Ahh yes very reliable source you referenced there :P, but i think I'll rely on Lebeeya's account :p.

@ Lebeeya :

I'm sure if any woman can do it, it would be you :p.

I saw such beaches in Lebanon; they were covered with big walls and had female guards.
A Lebanese friend of mine was wearing burqa and went to this beach to get tanned in a bikini. When she came back, she was all burned red and complained about the pain!
As a kid I remember there were women beaches in Tripoli or was it just women pools??
